Every good website design starts with a plan and an architectural structure otherwise know as the site map. It is a rather simple drawing but very useful chart that outlines the structure of your website. It helps layout and determine where all of the pieces of your website belong and in what order. Planning the information architecture of your website is one of the most important aspects of developing your website. It must detail a logical flow for accessing the information and it must be flexible for in case you want to add information to the site down the road. The objective is to organize the information to make your content easy to find. The larger the site, the more important the information architecture. First make a list of all your headings then under primary heading, you can list other topics accessible through that same area of the site. Take a look at the website information architectural structure for DebsWEBS below. My primary buttons for the major headlines are at the left and below my architectural structure shows links specific to any additional areas under the primary topic. This site is very flexible so I can change it and add on to it fairly easily without hindering my original design. |
